TIPP CITY, OH – The Downtown Tipp City Partnership is bringing baseball back to Tipp City! Vintage baseball, a popular sport throughout the Midwest, is coming to Tipp as the Kettering Clodbusters visit on August 16th at 2pm to put on a free exhibition game at the Willowtree Inn, located at 1900 W State Route 571, Tipp City, OH?. There will be ample free parking and the organizing committee is in the process of setting up for the event, so more details are to come.

The Partnership will be fielding a group of volunteers, playing under the name the Tippecanoe Canal Jumpers. Vintage Base Ball is base ball (yes, it was spelled two words prior to the 1880s) played by the rules and customs of the 19th Century. The exhibition game and other events will be held to raise funds and awareness in preparation for fielding a team for the 2010 vintage baseball season.

“Reed Spencer and I have been working on this idea for a couple of years,” said Greg Enslen, team organizer and DTCP President. “We decided that the best way to grow interest in the concept would be to hold an exhibition game with another local team.” Enslen said that he and Spencer have been discussing the idea since 2006, but the time is finally right to kick off the team.

Anyone interested in playing or joining our organizing committee may sign up at our website at www.tippecanoecanaljumpers.com or by contacting Matt Owen, DTCP Executive Director, at (937) 667-8300. For more information or to read about vintage baseball or the history of baseball in Tipp City, please visit our website.

The 6th annual Tipp City Antique and Artisan Show will be returning to Tipp City’s Main Street, which will be closed from 9 am to 5 pm to accommodate the 60 participating merchants and artisans, who will be displaying unique and collectible primitives, glassware, garden architectural items, furniture, vintage clothing and jewelry, and other collectibles. Many local artists will also be participating, bringing their watercolors, oils, pottery, weaving, metal and wood forms, photography, “papers”, hand-embroidered items and jewelry. Other merchants will be doing ongoing, live demonstrations of their work techniques and be creating unique works of art right in front of your eyes! Some art will be in the form of music and dance throughout the day at a stage located at the corner of Third and Main streets.

To add to the festivities, the Tippecanoe Farmer’s Market will also be participating throughout the day with fresh flowers, fruits and vegetables, and the nearby Tippecanoe Museum will be open all day, with docents to help you enjoy your visit. For “eats,” look into the Pancake Breakfast from 8-11 sponsored by the Tipp United Methodist Church, the Spaghetti Dinner from 4-6 sponsored by the Miami Democratic Women’s Club and food booths sponsored by local organizations through out the day. The local restaurants will also be open their regular hours with full menus.

For more information, please see www.visittippcity.org or call Ruth Safreed at 657-3365.

The Tippecanoe Farmers’ Market will kick off its 3rd season on June 13, 2009! Each Saturday, the Market provides hundreds of eager shoppers with a dynamic place to purchase the best products from local vendors – fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables, delectable baked goods and freshly prepared food items, beautiful garden plants and fresh cut flowers, amazing handmade products and more!

The Market, located in the heart of downtown Tipp City on Third at Main Street, is a great place to see your neighbors, grab a bite to eat and enjoy a beautiful Saturday morning. Plus, there will be a variety of special events happening throughout the market season. Last year’s salsa tasting was a big hit and will be back again this season!

Also back by popular demand, the 2009 Market will be extended to the end of October. The Market will be open on Saturdays, June 13th through October 24th, from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM.

WASHINGTON, D.C.— The City of Tipp City was recently honored when First Lady Laura Bush, Honorary Chair of the Preserve America initiative, designated it as one of the nation’s newest Preserve America Communities.

“Preserve America Communities demonstrate that they are committed to preserving America’s heritage while ensuring a future filled with opportunities for learning and enjoyment,” Mrs. Bush said. “This community designation program, combined with the Preserve America Grant Program, Preserve America Presidential Awards, and other federal support, provides strong incentives for continued preservation of our cultural and natural heritage resources. I commend you for your commitment to preserving an important part of our nation’s historic past for visitors, neighbors, and, most importantly, for children.”

Mayor Tim Evans received a letter dated December 12th, 2008 and will receive a certificate of designation signed by Mrs. Bush announcing the City of Tipp City is now a Preserve America Community. Communities designated through the program receive national recognition for their efforts. Benefits include the right to use the Preserve America logo on signs and promotional materials; eligibility for Preserve America Grants; notification to state tourism offices; and listing in a Web-based directory that showcases Tipp City’s preservation efforts and heritage tourism destinations. Preserve America Communities are also featured in National Register Travel Itineraries and in “Teaching With Historic Places” curricular materials created by the National Park Service.

Nearly $17 million in Preserve America Grants have been awarded since 2006 to support community efforts to demonstrate sustainable uses of their historic and cultural sites, focusing on the economic and educational opportunities related to heritage tourism. Grants for 44 recipients in 24 states totaling more than $4.3 million were announced on September 29, 2008 and the next round of grants will be announced in January. The grants of $20,000 to $250,000 are awarded on a competitive, matching fund basis to help communities develop sustainable management strategies and sound business practices for the continued preservation and use of their heritage assets. The grants support research, planning, marketing, interpretation, and training efforts.

The Preserve America initiative is an Administration effort to encourage and support community efforts to preserve and enjoy America’s priceless cultural and natural heritage. The goals of the initiative include a greater shared knowledge about the nation’s past; strengthened regional identities and local pride; increased local participation in preserving the country’s cultural and natural heritage assets; and support for the economic vitality of our communities.

“Sustainable historic preservation is a wise investment in the future, not a cost for maintaining the past. Communities and the nation receive significant economic, educational, and cultural benefits, including heritage tourism, in return for their preservation efforts,” said John L. Nau, III, chairman of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, which administers Preserve America programs for the White House in cooperation with the Department of the Interior.

The White House is working with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, Education, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, and Transportation, the General Services Administration, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the President’s Council on Environmental Quality, and the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities to implement Preserve America.
