Main Street Program application in works
TIPP CITY — When the city and the Chamber of Commerce joined forces to hire an executive to serve the downtown program and the chamber, it was no secret it was a step toward a possible Main Street-type program, someday, for the downtown.

That someday may be near.

Representatives of the Downtown Tipp City Partnership told the City Council on Dec. 15 a letter of intent to apply for the Main Street USA program has been submitted and work is under way on the formal application, due in February.

The Main Street approach — used across the nation, including several Miami Valley communities — focuses on revitalization and growth in a downtown district.

The city and Tipp City chamber in late 2006 showed a commitment to the downtown by hiring a part-time downtown director, who also serves as part-time chamber executive. Under the three-year agreement, the city and chamber each pays $30,000 a year toward the position salary, with the chamber picking up any pension or deferred compensation it might want to make.
