This year’s theme is WE LOVE OUR MUMS. And we want you to show us how much you love your “mum” and why.

We encourage you to write an essay for the Essay Contest so that you can have a say in who is the 2009 Grand Marshal. If you think your mom or that special woman in your life should be the Grand Marshal because they are so giving, so kind or just such a great person- write it down. Send it in to the Mum Festival Committee, where judges will review and choose the “MUMS” of the year. There is a catch- you must be a school age child during the 2009-2010 school year and the categories will be:

• Kindergarten – 1st grade
• 2nd – 3rd grade
• 4th – 5th grade
• 6th – 8th grade
• 9th – 12th grade

The chosen Grand Marshal(s) will be in the Parade with the person who nominated them. Please drop off your essay to the Tipp Monroe Community Services, or mail it to Tipp City Mum Festival, P.O. On behalf of all the Mum Festival volunteers, we are honored to welcome everyone to the 2009 Tipp City Mum Festival. This year’s theme is “We Love our Mums”

Our festivities begin Friday night, September 25 at 5 PM with the 18th Annual Antique Car Cruise-In/Street Dance, and the Little Mr. and Miss Mum Pageant at 7 PM at the Tipp Roller Mill on Main Street. Many of our downtown merchants will have extended hours for your shopping pleasure.
Saturday features a wonderful parade right down Main Street beginning at 10 AM with local and surrounding area bands, floats, clowns, classic cars, and many other entertaining units.

After the parade, be sure to visit the Tipp City Park, located on North Third Street, for a great arts and crafts festival, great concessions, a merchants market and wonderful entertainment. The children, big and small, will enjoy the 9th Annual MumKids Land held each year at the tennis courts. They will find themselves using up energy playing on inflatables of all types from noon to 8 PM on Saturday and noon to 5 PM on Sunday.

A complete schedule of free events and entertainment for the entire weekend include the Tipp City Community Bank, Ronald McDonald, Jazzercise, Kettering Banjo Society, Funky G and the Groove Machine, Queens Pageant Talent, Cloggers, and Stranger. Sunday, the arts and crafts festival continues in the Tipp City Park, beginning at 11 AM. Be sure to check out our vendors and entertainment until 6 PM. We would like to send out a very special thanks to all of the fabulous volunteers that have given their time over the past year to make this year’s Mum Festival a great success.

TIPP CITY — Mums — real and not so real — are everywhere as the final touches are put in place for this weekend’s 49th Mum Festival. In recent days, up to 650 mums have been painted or repainted on sidewalks, driveways and streets as part of the Adopt-A-Mum project by Boy Scout Troop 586. Some 650 mums have been planted or painted on sidewalks, driveways and streets prior to the festival.

The 22 Scouts and their parents team up to sell the mums, then paint them using templates allowing for a green stem and flowers of red, yellow, white or a combination. Mike and Dolores Droesch, in their first year running Adopt-A Mum, said they are happy. “It’s a fantastic fundraiser for us,” Mike Droesch said, adding profits help pay for camping activities of Scouts such as their sons, Dan and Andy. When the painting is done, the work isn’t for the Scouts. They also sell cobbler made in Dutch ovens at the festival site in City Park.

Kathy Taylor, director of Tipp-Monroe Community Services, said everything is in place for the festival, which kicks off Friday night with a Cruise-In downtown and opens Saturday with the annual Run for the Mums across city streets. “We’re set. We’re ready to run,” Taylor said. Taylor also is in charge of weekend concessions at the City Park. More local businesses are involved in food offerings this year, including Fox’s Pizza and Hickory River, and a local church will be offering unique coffees, she said.
